MSLD520 - Module 9 - Course Reflections - Madeline Campbell
Throughout the past nine weeks, my previously formed ideas
on leadership and management have been greatly altered. What I have learned for
the framework of leadership skills has been very refreshing and motivating for
someone who hopes to lead and motivate a team effectively. For my personal
framework of leadership, I hope to continue to work on multiple aspects such as
managing stress to work more efficiently, communicate in a fashion that is more
productive, as well as motivating others to be inspired to do their given
position to the best of their abilities. Since I am not currently in a position
that holds any leadership responsibilities, adorning qualities and working on
these qualities now, I believe will be highly beneficial for when I do adorn a
leadership position. There are also qualities that I wish to change. The first
one being stress management. I have been actively been working on this since
April, however, I am desirous of learning skills and tactics more in-depth. The
task we were given to “do nothing for ten minutes a day” was very eye-opening
to 1. how difficult it was for me to do that and 2. how needed it is for me to
do nothing for ten minutes of my day. Turly taking time and not being “on the
go” at all hours of the day is something that I note and want to work on more
in the future.
Another area of change that I mentioned in the blog post
from this module, is that I wish to work on my communication within my work
place. To further my skills in leadership for the future, I wish to work on
motivating others in my communication, as well as learning how to be more
direct when it comes to asking others about their work. I do not want to be
direct in a rude or passive tone, but I tend to “beat around the bush” with
work issues or stress.
The last area I hope to change and continue to learn in
would be regarding motivating others. I do think that I motivate specific
individuals within our team, but not to the best of my abilities. I hope to
learn to motivate and empower others in a way that truly alters their everyday
work life. Chapter 6 of our tezt and
Daniel Pinks talk were both very eye-opening and intriguing to my personal
work-life and made me want to “re-vamp” how I motivate others.
I do know once I become a manager, or leader, implementing
what I have learned throughout this course, as well as continuing to learn
about leadership skills will be much harder to execute than I can begin to
imagine. There are numerous different avenues, strategies and styles to
leaderships. Each position, team and organizational culture can affect how one
might lead a team. I hope to continue to take courses on leadership(even when I
am completed with my masters) to simply further my education on the topic.
